Summer is almost here in southwest Florida. Is your skin ready to glow?

Summer is always a special time in Sarasota-Manatee, but this year is especially exciting. That’s because after more than 12 months of pandemic precautions, the widespread vaccination rollout means a lot more of us will be able to interact, up close, without having half of our faces covered by a mask! We’ll be seeing more of each other’s skin than we have since 2019.

If your skincare routine has gotten a little lax during COVID, never fear. There are some steps you can take right now to make sure your skin lives up to the summer 2021 hype.

Exfoliate

Before your natural skin can shine, you need to get rid of all the stuff that’s holding it back. Because let’s face it: This is Florida. You’re going to sweat in the summertime. You just want those pores to be clear.

Especially if it’s been a while, you’ll probably want to start this summer off with a professionally administered exfoliation session and/or chemical peel. Once your skin is thoroughly exfoliated, maintain that fresh surface with a regular exfoliation regimen. Talk to your skincare professional about what scrubs, sponges and brushes work best for your skin.

Hydrate

The simplest, most effective skincare procedure is also the one most people leave out. Your skin health starts on the inside. And if you’re not staying hydrated the rest of the year, then your skin is really going to suffer in Florida summer.

The good news is, if you get into the habit of drinking water throughout the day, then you’ll be taking great care of your skin without even thinking about it.

So here’s what you do: Get a water filter so your tap water tastes great. And get a water bottle with a lid as well as an opening big enough to put ice cubes through.

Then you can take great-tasting ice water with you wherever you go.

Sunscreen, Sunscreen, Sunscreen

Welcome to the Sunshine State: Now apply some SPF 50 and put a hat on.

Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach. When you step outside, you’re exposing your skin to the sun and its damaging and dangerous UV rays—especially in the summer, when we walk around with our skin exposed just to try to stay cool.

So make sunscreen application a part of your morning routine. And if you don’t already have a preferred sunscreen lotion, talk to us. We can recommend something that works for you, your routine, and your skin.

Sunscreen is so important to your long-term health that we want to make sure we find just the right product to keep you comfortable and safe.

Mid-Day Maintenance

We tend to think of skincare as a morning and/or night routine, but in Florida summer, you might need some lunchtime touch-ups, too.

Regardless of skin type, sweat and heat can disrupt your skin’s delicate balance. Consider a mid-day cleansing if you’re struggling with oiliness. And of course, if you’ve got outdoor afternoon activities, don’t forget to reapply your sunscreen.

Most of all, to make sure you’re doing everything you can to protect your skin this summer while letting your beauty shine, talk to a skincare professional. We look forward to seeing you this summer.
