We’re putting a lot of emphasis on hyperpigmentation so far in 2025, and with good reason: Any good med spa in Bradenton, Florida should have full knowledge of, and numerous treatment options for, hyperpigmentation. It’s a common issue, especially when it comes to aging and sun damage. And there are a lot of wonderful, effective treatments for it. You just have to choose wisely based on your skin type and sensitivity level.
Many hyperpigmentation treatments focus on eliminating the problematic “dark spots” by eliminating the damaged, darkened skin cells themselves. We might remove hyperpigmented skin cells with IPL or laser treatments, exfoliation, or any number of peel options. And those are all fabulous solutions that work really well!
But we also have another option that’s so far been flying under the radar. Tranexamic acid (TXA) already has commonplace uses in medicine, most often to help with blood clotting issues and other heavy-bleeding scenarios. But it turns out it’s also a fantastic secret weapon against hyperpigmentation. Here’s why.
What is Tranexamic Acid?
Tranexamic acid is a synthetic chemical compound that’s often used as an FDA-approved oral medicine for people with bleeding issues like hemophilia and heavy menstruation.
In those contexts, it works by promoting blood clotting and/or stopping blood clots from breaking down.
What Does Tranexamic Acid do for Skincare?
Applied topically, TXA is gaining momentum as an effective “brightener,” one that can lighten dark spots and create a more even skin tone.
How Does Tranexamic Acid Treat Hyperpigmentation?
Because it’s chemically an “acid,” you might think that tranexamic acid works as a chemical exfoliant or a peel. But it’s actually a gentler physiological process than that.
TXA fundamentally affects the skin cells’ ability to produce melanin, which is the pigment that darkens skin cells. When cells are producing too much melanin, TXA interrupts that process while leaving the cells themselves healthy.
Does TXA Cause Side Effects?
Very few side effects have been reported when tranexamic acid is used topically. In fact, many people with melasma prefer TXA to the other common treatment, hydroquinone, because TXA did not cause skin irritation.
That’s one of the reasons that makes it such a fantastic option for everyday use. TXA works well with virtually all skin types.
The Benefits of TXA for Bradenton Skincare
On top of its widespread effectiveness for treating hyperpigmentation with virtually no side effects, tranexamic acid has even been shown to repair the skin barrier! That means that not only is it brightening your skin, but it’s repairing the issue that allowed sun damage to cause the hyperpigmentation in the first place.
While our expert estheticians continue to offer the people of Bradenton VI Peels, microneedling, laser treatments, and all other med spa solutions for hyperpigmentation, we also sing the praises of tranexamic acid.
This month (February 2025) we’re encouraging everyone to give it a try by promoting Sanitas Brightening Peel Pads and AnteAge Brightener—both of which utilize tranexamic acid, and both of which are available right here at our Bradenton med spa. This month, when you buy either of those products, you’ll get $5 off Ormedic Lip Serum, a fantastic solution for incorporating your lips into your whole-body skincare.
