What Can Exosomes Do for Skincare?

Exosomes were just introduced to the skincare industry in the last couple of years. In fact, just last year, Practical Dermatology magazine suggested that exosomes could be “the next big thing in skincare.”

And just last month, in the October 2023 issue of Elle, the president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons said exosomes “could be bigger than Botox.”

As science has validated the therapeutic power of these biological byproducts, aestheticians have been able to effectively harness that power for straightforward treatments that can be performed in a med spa environment.

At Bellagena, we’re proud to offer exosomes to our Bradenton clientele as part of our extensive menu of skincare services. And we’ve been truly amazed at the results that exosomes produce in a relatively short period of time. Even more importantly, our clients love them, too!

Here’s a rundown of what exosomes are, and what they can do for skincare.

What Are Exosomes?

Exosomes are extracts of stem cells. They carry a variety of biologic materials—including mRNA, lipids, cytokines and growth factors—to communicate with other cells and give them what they need to produce healthy new cells.

In the skincare industry, we associate stem cells with healing, anti-inflammatory properties, and new cell growth. Well, exosomes are the parts of stem cells responsible for much of those growth factor properties.

So when you take away the rest of the stem cell, you can think of exosomes like concentrated stem cell growth factors. In fact, when compared with the same volume of stem cells, exosomes contain three times the growth factors.

How Do Exosomes Work on Your Skin?

Exosomes are absorbed or “ingested” into a cell and incorporated into that cell’s behavior. The cell doesn’t just receive a message from the exosome; it makes that message a part of its makeup.

And because they are so efficiently absorbed into cellular tissue, exosomes have even been used to transmit medications directly into cells.

What Kinds of Results Do Exosomes Produce in Skincare?

Exosomes produce some of the same kinds of results that you see with stem cell therapies—but exosomes work faster, stronger, and even more efficiently. Exosomes have been shown to be especially effective at triggering wound closing and new skin cell production, including collagen production.

And exosomes don’t just heal wounds quickly. Exosomes are so efficient in their healing properties that they have been scientifically shown to reduce scar production. That means that skin damage can heal faster and without the typical lasting signs of that quick-healing process.

This treatment option also means that by breaking down existing damaged skin cells via aesthetic procedure, and then introducing exosomes immediately, we can replace old scarring—including acne scars—with freshly healed, youthful and unblemished skin.

The latest studies are even showing that exosomes can be a key factor in communications between pigment-producing skin cells. Exosome treatments can produce healthy, supple and even skin across a number of factors, including texture, elasticity, and even skin tone.
