What happens as we age? Why does this happen? What can we do to help?
A major concern common amongst our clients is aging skin. Of course, this is to be expected; your skin is your largest organ and probably the first to begin aging (as early as your mid-twenties).
What causes the skin to age?
According to Jenny Yelle, a Holistic Wellness Educator, “There are two main factors that cause your skin to age: they are the genetic factors and the environmental factors” also known as intrinsic or extrinsic (Yelle, What Causes Your Skin to Age? The Intrinsic & Extrinsic Factors
). Intrinsic factors happen inside of you. They include genetic factors, cellular metabolism, and hormonal changes. Extrinsic factors are caused by environmental elements that include a lot of things from sleeping positions to pollution and diet. Both types may seem beyond your control, but that is not the case!
What can you do to help?
Yelle continues in her article about ways to prevent such damage: “Your genes will make you predisposed to some health conditions (which can influence our rate of aging), however, our genes are not our destiny! We CAN significantly influence our gene expression by the foods we eat, the lifestyle we live, and the thoughts we think….[For example,] you can influence how your body stores fat and how balanced your hormones are. In fact, hereditary factors only account for approximately 3% of aging. So, the better we maintain our health, especially by nourishing our bodies, being physically active, and managing stress, the slower we will intrinsically age….If you strive to live a healthy, non-toxic, natural lifestyle, it will hopefully help you live a long, happy life. It’s never too early or too late to make positive health changes” (Yelle).
By taking control of what we put in and around our bodies, we are more likely to slow down the aging process significantly! Moreover, there are proactive treatments you can seek out to help with anti-aging.
